This was an excellent read. Thank you so much. As an American, I’ve watched Germany’s response to populism, active protests/ringing alarm bells, with a lot of admiration. It feels like far too many Americans do not even realize there is something to fight right now. It’s incredibly upsetting.

I'm so glad I started to follow you, everything I've read from you has hit it on the head. I believe that yes we do have waste in our government. What i don't like is how they are going about doing it. One step I've been trying, even if it's a small step is signing petitions and sending pre-made letters of objection to my Senators and Congressional elected officials. It's very terrifying how they are dismantling the civil rights act and signing executive orders that are trying to say that certain people because of race, religion or ther countries are really not welcome.

What are your international media outlet recommendations?

An easy start is The Guardian. It’s based in London but provides European/global coverage. It’s also good because it has no paywall and it’s easy to disable the cookies.

Additionally, there’s The Economist, which despite its title is a good general magazine. But it only has got restricted free access.

Normally I’d agree with the recommendation for Der Spiegel, but there is very little which is not behind a paywall. And for the rest you have to accept cookies and advertising.

Hope this helps.

You can also read https://www.tagesschau.de/, https://www.zdf.de/nachrichten and https://www.deutschlandfunk.de/.

It's free but in German. Use a translator.

I‘m a German who has lived in the U.S. for a couple of decades now. Experiencing the descent into fascism in this country has been absolutely horrifying and I am concerned what will happen in Germany in the next few years. I try to keep up with German news by listening to podcasts and subscribing to publications like the Spiegel, and I hope that German voters will look at what is happening in the U.S. and not lull themselves into the belief that it can’t happen (again) in Germany.

Tha major problem is the power of the money the Musks of this planet are pumping into the far right movements throughout Europe. The misinformation spreading through social media and the so called "Leader of the World" forming an alliance with Putin. We must find a solution for this.

During the past weeks thousands of citizens (and non-citizens) have taken to the streets to offer resistance to the right-wing forces in German politics today.

There is a federal election coming up in Germany on February 23.

The extreme right party, AfD, us among the top contenders.

Look for the video of Elon Musk speaking with the AfD chairwoman, Alice Weidel.

It's better to show your conviction before an election and to vote accordingly than to protest against the result of an election.

I am SO glad that other nations are seeing what we have tried sounding the alarm bell over. They understand the gravity of the situation and are making necessary preparations while we’re over here still chanting his campaign slogans and refusing to educate ourselves on what is really happening.

I’d like to recommend a podcast series: It’s Rachel Maddow Ultra. There she tells the story of real American Nazis - and she tells it well!

My grandmothers family was from Thuringia which the AfD has gained a foothold in. I see the horrible parallels of history in America taking shape. Trump took pages out of Hitlers playbook and used it to turn masses of people to support and promote his rhetoric. The connections and similarities are undeniable even though there are those who think the comparison is ridiculous. The actions in America today are almost verbatim from 1933 Germany. We have not learned those costly lessons and are now repeating much of it. I don’t think America comes out of this ever the same again.

Unfortunately, by Monday Germany may very well be on its way right behind the US. According to polls Ive seen, the conservative parties are doing much better than left leaning parties.

Well written & saved. Der Spiegel is a fairly conservative newspaper as I know so for them to report like this is serious. Germany knows a thing or two on this subject, people.

Pardon the language, but the world is a fucked up place right now, and sadly you have not seen the worst of it. Monumental changes are happening, that will affect our children and grandchildren for years to come.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I have been a German mom in the USA under Reagan and I am really concerned about the Dogeship in the Whitehouse and their forceful activities throughout Europe to influence our elections. This is something we have not experienced so far. Since WW2 the USA was a close ally, but now a plyer of Russia and USA tries to tighten it's grip on us.

We will not let them.

Germany has been here and done this! They are disgusted at what they’re seeing happen to our country. Americans should pay attention!
